About this Event

Why The Aged Care Doctor?

This is an educational event for ANY doctor who provides medical services to patients in residential aged care.

Those of us who do substantial aged care work recognise that it is now a subspecialty in its own right. Residents of aged care make up around 1% of the population and traditional service models designed to care for the 99% aren’t always geared up to provide the best for this special cohort.

The Aged Care Doctor aims to bring doctors of all specialties who have an interest in residential aged care together in a spirit of collaboration, learning, fun, cross-pollination, positivity and inspiration to explore what’s possible.

2020 was an incredibly difficult year for anyone associated with Aged Care. 2021 will be an equally challenging year.

What Will The Aged Care Doctor Involve?

The theme will be simple, practical and relevant actionable learning. Light on academics, high on application to real life. Knowledge-sharing and networking will be key parts of the day.

There will be a mix of positive, inspirational stories of collaboration and innovation, lead by our keynote speaker Professor Susan Kurrle (of "Old People’s Home for 4-Year Olds" fame)

Clinical topics will cover common clinical conundrums faced in aged care. The clinical elements will be facilitated in smaller group formats to allow all attendees to participate and get maximal benefit from meeting colleagues and sharing knowledge.

Hear from thought leaders creating innovative models of care that are making working in aged care more rewarding and fun.

And learn how to protect yourself in the modern MBS Compliance environment.

Who’s running it?

The event has been convened by Dr Paul Yates and Dr Sachin B Patel. However, it would not be possible without the contributions of a whole host of doctors passionate about aged care across the country.

Dr Paul Yates is a Consultant Geriatrician at Austin Health and Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne Department of Medicine. He is currently Clinical Lead for Residential In Reach and has an interest in care of older persons at the interface between acute care and community, including residential aged care.

Dr Sachin Patel is a General Practitioner and Founder of Aged Care GP. He is a keen innovator in the provision of Primary Care to older people living in aged care. He is passionate about helping GPs discover the fulfillment that working with residents in aged care can bring. The event is being funded and underwritten by Aged Care GP and is supported by the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health (MACH) and Melbourne Ageing Research Collaboration (MARC).
