Are you a general practitioner? Are you interested in understanding the nature of substance use, addiction and the appropriate treatment options available? Come along to our free education session in July!

This Drug and Alcohol education session from Assosciate Professor Yvonne Bonomo, Addiction Medicine Specialist, and Dr Greta Moon, Psychiatrist, will include information about:

  • Accessing the drug and alcohol treatment and answering any questions
  • The medical treatment of addiction
  • Accessing the DACAS service available to all GPs
  • GPs accessing the Department of Addiction Medicine for any secondary consultation needs they may have
  • SafeScript and HealthPathways
During this session, the Muslim Youth and Family team will present on their programs, referral processes and provide opportunity to talk with Odyssey House Victoria, Youth Support and Advocacy, Self Help Addiction Resources Centre and the Salvation Army. Dr Bonomo will also be speaking on adolescent development and how it impacts on working with young people and Dr Moon will be speaking on substance use and co morbid mental illness. There will also be a discussion about GPs experience of AoD in the cultural context. 

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session, GPs will be able to:

  • Utilise the Muslim Youth and Family program and referral pathways in the treatment of Alcohol and other Drug use
  • Describe medical treatment options for Alcohol and other Drug use
  • Detail the comorbidity between substance use and mental illness
