Mental Health Treatment Plans – A guide for health professionals 2022

Patients with a mental health condition, including those with a chronic or non-chronic diagnosis, benefit from structured management of their treatment needs and referral to appropriate services.

Mental Health Treatment Plan (also known as a Mental Health Care Plan) must be completed when referring a patient to a psychiatrist, psychologist, eligible social workers or occupational therapists (providing focused psychological strategies) through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

Referrals made under the Better Access initiative or the Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) program both requires a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

This guide provides useful information on how to complete the Mental Health Treatment Plan.
