From 1 October 2018 Western Health will be introducing new referral management guidelines and processes for our specialist clinics to provide patients and health professionals with better access to the right care at the right time.

New referral guidelines have been developed for the following six specialty areas:

  1. Gastroenterology
  2. Haematology
  3. Neurology
  4. Diabetes
  5. Urology
  6. Paediatrics

What is changing?

Western Health will review referrals in the same way as we do now. Urgent cases will still be given the highest priority and should be seen within 30 days, while people with more routine conditions will be given the next available appointment.

However, referrals for the specialty areas listed above will only be accepted at Western Health if they comply with the new guidelines.

Guidelines for the remaining speciality clinics are still being developed and will be implemented at a later date.
