North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) is pleased to announce a new initiative aiming to get local people talking about cancer with their friends, family and health professionals.
The ‘Let’s Talk about Cancer’ pop-up shop is open from 6 February to 3 March 2018, providing a welcoming space for people to come in and talk to friendly, trained staff and volunteers about how to prevent and detect cancer.
People will be able to discuss:
- Lifestyle changes that can help to prevent cancers
- Their family history
- Screening services available
- Symptoms and signs to talk to their doctor about
The initiative is a partnership between NWMPHN, Western Health, IPC Health, Cancer Council Victoria and the State Government of Victoria, to help reduce the incidence of cancer in our community and increase early detection rates.
Nearly 11,000 Victorians died from cancer in 2015 and almost 32,000 were diagnosed. NWMPHN CEO Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter said prevention and early detection are crucial to bringing these numbers down.
“Around one-third of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes such as healthier diets, reducing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking and avoiding excessive sun exposure,” A/Prof Carter said.
“Using cancer-screening services is also crucial – the sooner cancer is detected, the more effective options there are for treatment.
“This initiative aims to get people talking about cancer with their GP, friends and family, conversations which could save their lives.”
