COVID-19 vaccination training update for immunisation providers

  15 February 2021  NWMPHN

National COVID-19 vaccine training for clinical and non-clinical staff involved in the administration of COVID-19 vaccines is now available on the Australian Department of Health website.

Who needs to complete this training?

Authorised immunisation providers must complete this training before administering COVID-19 vaccinations. This includes health professionals in hospitals, general practices, state and Commonwealth vaccination clinics, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and pharmacies.

There are currently six core modules to complete, plus additional modules that are specific to the individual vaccines. The core modules must be completed before accessing the vaccine-specific modules.

At the time of writing, the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine module is available. More modules will be published and will need to be completed when new vaccines are approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Modules for the Oxford University/AstraZeneca and Novavax vaccines are not yet available.

When should people working in primary health care complete this training?

The training is being provided free to all authorised COVID-19 vaccination providers. These first modules are targeting health professionals in hospitals who will be administering the Pfizer vaccine.

Authorised immunisation providers in our region can complete the training now. However, they will be required to update their training once modules for the Oxford University/AstraZeneca, Novavax and potentially other vaccines are added.

Supporting non-clinical and administrative workers are also required to complete this training. However, people in this group need only complete the three core non-clinical modules.
