Since 2021, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has partnered with local allied health providers to bring an exercise-based strength and balance program to residents of aged care homes within the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne.

At its core is a modified version of the Sunbeam Program, which has been proven effective in preventing falls in older adults.

Commissioned by NWMPHN, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and exercise physiologists lead small groups of residents in 13 weeks of bi-weekly exercise sessions. The aim is to improve mobility, spatial awareness and core strength.

As part of the program’s evaluation, the service providers monitor progress by taking measurements at set intervals.

In 2024, 53 aged care homes have signed up for the program, with about 1400 residents taking part.

Four program rounds were completed between 2021 and 2023. This infographic shows the results.
