General practice respiratory clinics

Page last updated: 9am, 30 June 2023

General practice respiratory clinics (GPRCs) provide patients with access to assessment for respiratory symptoms, testing and treatment close to where they live.

GPRCs now operate at many locations across Melbourne as part of partnerships between primary health networks and the Victorian and Australian Governments.

 Find your nearest GPRC.

Who can access GPRCs?

GPRCs support adults, children, infants and babies with respiratory symptoms to access a comprehensive respiratory assessment and receive immediate support in management of their illness. GPRCs are for people with:

  • confirmed COVID-19 (book ahead)
  • COVID-19, influenza and cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, sore throat or fever
  • mild shortness of breath*.

*If you have severe trouble breathing, blueness around the mouth, chest pains, or pain in your arms or jaw, call triple zero (000) for urgent help.

If you can’t see your regular GP, a GPRC can provide the face-to-face attention you need. Services are available to people with or without a Medicare card, at no cost to the patient. Some clinics will be open after hours and on weekends (see below for opening hours).

More information

  • Victorian Government funded GPRCs

The Victorian Government is funding GP respiratory clinics across Victoria to help Victorians with respiratory illnesses, which are free to use and designed to help ease the pressure on hospital emergency departments.

NWMPHN conducted an expression of interest process and is supporting providers to operate these clinics in our region.

The Victorian Government funded-GPRCs complement other COVID-19 testing sites including Australian Government-funded GP Respiratory Clinics, hospital respiratory clinics, drive-through and pop-up clinics.

  • Australian Government funded GPRCs

The Australian Government is funding up to 100 GP respiratory clinics across the country. Visit health.gov.au for more information.

  • Our role

The 20 GP Respiratory Clinics are funded by the Victorian Government. NWMPHN is responsible for contracting providers and working with them to ensure the clinics operate successfully.

We are keen to ensure that general practices and other primary care providers in our region are aware of and referring patients with respiratory symptoms to these clinics.
