Free PD Webinar: Non-medical supports and programs to improve older Australians’ mental health

Attend this webinar produced by the Mental Health Professionals’ Network on Tuesday 6th December to learn how non-medical support programs for older Australians living in the community and Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) can support mental health and wellbeing.

Our interdisciplinary panel will explore how non-medical supports and programs can reduce workforce pressure, improve focus on living well, improve mental health, and reduce medication use for older Australians.

This webinar will cover:

  • How non-medical support programs for older Australians living in the community and Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) can support mental health and wellbeing.
  • How these therapies and programs help to mitigate the effects of dementia, mood disorders and chronic disease experienced by older Australians, as well as reduce workforce pressure and medication use.

This webinar is free to attend and is the sixth in a series produced by MHPN on behalf of a national collaboration between the 31 Australian Primary Health Networks.

Speakers

Prof. Colleen Doyle - Research Psychologist, VIC

Dr. Zara Thompson - Music Therapist, VIC

Hilary O'Connell - Occupational Therapist, WA

The session will be facilitated by Dr Stephen Ginsborg, GP, NSW.

Learning outcomes:

  • Discuss and identify how non-medical supports and programs for older Australians living in Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) and community settings can support mental health and wellbeing.
  • Outline the benefits of Art and Music therapies, volunteer activities, and intergenerational programs and initiatives, as options to mitigate the experience of dementia and mood disorders, improve mental health, and limit the progression of chronic disease in older Australians.
  • Explore the evidence associated with how non-medical supports and programs can reduce workforce pressure, improve focus on living well, improve mental health and reduce medication use for older Australians.
