About this session:

  • Early medical abortion is a safe, legal and common procedure. In Australia, early medical abortion encompasses the use of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end a pregnancy up to nine weeks of gestation. Medical abortion may be preferred to surgical abortion as it is more affordable, less invasive and accessible in primary care settings.
  • Access barriers still remain for people seeking early medical abortion, with less than 10% of GPs in Australia registered to prescribe medical abortion and even fewer doing so in primary care.
  • This forum will increase your knowledge of early medical abortion provision, including necessary steps to establishing service provision, and introduce professional networks available to support implementation of medical abortion provision at your organisation, including the Royal Women's Hospital Clinical Champions Project.

Experts speaking at this event include:

Dr Kathleen McNamee, resident Medical Director, Sexual Health Victoria

Maria Loupetis, Sexual and Reproductive and Refugee Health Nurse, EACH

Larissa Hudson, Senior nurse educator / sexual and reproductive health nurse, Sexual Health Victoria

Cath Hannon, Project Manager Sexual & Reproductive Health Clinical Champion Project, Royal Women's Hospital

Carolyn Mogharbel, Manager, 1800 My Options and Women's Health Victoria
