The role that family can play in recovery from BPD is widely recognised. Emotion dysregulation can have a transactional effect, especially within complex family dynamics and severe mental health conditions. DBT has been adapted by Dr Alan Fruzzetti for use with couples, parents, and families, with multiple studies demonstrating successful outcomes.
At Spectrum we incorporate couple, parent and family work in the DBT clinic and have seen benefits in terms of individual recovery and family relationships. In this training, we will teach family interventions to reduce dysfunctional individual behaviour patterns, and individual DBT skills (particularly Relationship Mindfulness and Interpersonal Effectiveness) adapted for parents and partners to support recovery in the family unit. Prior training in DBT is recommended although not essential for attendance at this workshop.
