Overview

North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) commissioned the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) to develop a plan to implement its statewide Aboriginal Social and Emotional Workforce Strategy in the NWMPHN region.

This project identified and prioritised actions needed to recruit, retain, and develop the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce. The work was completed in tandem with VACCHO’s development of its statewide strategy.

VACCHO analysed the Aboriginal health and wellbeing sector in the NWMPHN region to identify gaps, needs and opportunities to strengthen the workforce. It consulted with organisations working in the sector, Aboriginal community controlled and mainstream. A series of workshops informed a deeper understanding of the factors affecting recruitment, retention, and development.

Using these insights, VACCHO developed an implementation plan containing strategy and recommendations for the region, and a monitoring and evaluation framework to support it.

Outcomes

The plan outlines 10 strategic priorities and 23 actions to create a strong, skilled and vibrant Aboriginal health and wellbeing workforce.

The monitoring and evaluation framework ensures it can be implemented and audited effectively.

Implementation is aligned with the actions identified in the final Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Workforce Strategy report, written by VACCHO.
