Overview

The First Thousand Days clinic is a pilot program that provides wraparound care for individuals and their infants who are engaged with the Royal Women’s Hospital’s Alcohol and Drug Service (WADS) and where the infant is at risk of development delays due to maternal drug or alcohol use during pregnancy.

It provides case management and relevant support for the first thousand days of the infant’s life. Available services are case management, care coordination, paediatric follow-up, brief assessments, interventions and counselling.

The program is the first of its kind in the world. The Royal Women’s Hospital is documenting the project to share knowledge, so the model can potentially be replicated in other hospitals.

Visit the Royal Women’s Hospital website for more information.

Outcomes

  • Access to longer term support: Specialised case management for families engaged in WADS service from conception to age two.
  • Tailored AOD specialist care: Families receive specialist paediatric follow-up through WADS and are provided with community linkages and AOD support.
