Overview

North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network commissioned the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) to produce the ‘Rainbow Mob Health’ training module in collaboration with the University of Melbourne’s Wurru Wurru Health Unit. The module aims to enable better care for Rainbow Mob (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+SB people).

The module takes approximately 3 hours to complete and includes a variety of activities and content developed in collaboration with community members and informed by lived and living experience.

It is accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners for 3 hours of educational activity and is available free of charge through the VACCHO website.

Outcomes

The module helps people working in Aboriginal community controlled health organisations, Aboriginal community controlled organisations, LGBTIQA+ organisations and mainstream health services to become familiar with the diverse terminology, experiences, barriers and enablers for Rainbow Mob.

It helps participants to:

  • understand intersectionality and key terms around gender, sexuality, and First Nations culture
  • understand the social and cultural determinants of health and health priorities for Rainbow Mob
  • improve confidence in asking about names, pronouns, and a person’s Aboriginal identity
  • increase awareness of the barriers and enablers for Rainbow Mob in accessing safe and appropriate health and wellbeing services
  • build awareness of support services available to Rainbow Mob
  • improve confidence in delivering culturally safe care to Rainbow Mob.
