Overview

The Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association (AVWA) provides alcohol and other drug (AOD) support and information to the Vietnamese community within the NWMPHN catchment. The program is culturally sensitive and adaptable, utilising psychosocial and harm minimisation approaches to effectively assist individuals and families facing AOD concerns.

The available services within the program are individual and family counselling, care coordination, AOD information and education, and group work in the criminal justice setting.

Outcomes

  • Accessible care: Culturally appropriate, trauma-informed, and flexible community-based treatment and support for individuals, families, and significant others affected by alcohol and other drug concerns.
  • Tailored AOD education and information: Health promotion and community education initiatives alcohol and drug information specifically designed for the Vietnamese community.
  • Support for comorbidities: Address the needs of individuals with comorbidities, particularly those involved in the justice system, supporting comprehensive care.
  • Psychosocial funding grant: The program has received two rounds of psychosocial grants for 2023-24 and 2024-25. This is designed to enhance the capacity of the AOD program, specifically to support individuals with psychosocial issues and AOD comorbidities.
