Suicide prevention and intervention

Suicide is the leading cause of death for young people and older men in Australia. Suicide and suicidal thoughts are also a major health concern for all age groups.

We are using evidence-based approaches to reduce rates of suicide and working with service providers and communities to improve integration and awareness. Our work is underpinned by the national suicide prevention strategy.

The factors behind suicide are complex, and suicide affects more than immediate family, friends and acquaintances.

Working with services and communities, including people who have experienced suicidal ideation or bereavement, we are implementing a number of initiatives and strategies to address stigma, promote help-seeking and strengthen capacity of the health system to respond suicide risk.
