leadership, culture and team-based care were just some of the topics discussed at the ‘Leadership in General Practice’ workshop, held on Saturday 28 April.
The session brought together members of our Health Care Homes Leaders Group and other General Practitioners, Nurses and Practice Managers from our catchment to discuss:
- What we can learn about leadership from other industries
- The difference between leadership and management
- How to inspire practice teams
Against the backdrop of the changing health landscape, participants were encouraged to reflect on their own practices and were given tips and strategies on becoming engaging leaders and transforming their practices to improve patient outcomes. Those who attended the workshop acknowledged the fundamental role engaged leadership can have in their own practice, and the value of having regular discussions to compare notes with peers and work towards becoming a high-performing practice.
Primary health care is the foundation of the health system in Australia, and our dependence on general practice is only growing. From April 2015 to March 2016, nearly 90% of the Australian population claimed at least one GP service from Medicare. Although there are inherent issues with the current system, general practices are uniquely placed to support patients with more complex needs.
