The Victorian Department of Health (the department) has been notified of new cases of mpox (monkeypox) in Victoria. Please refer to the Chief Health Officer Alert for further details.

Providers should be on alert for patients presenting with symptoms of mpox. Refer to the department’s Mpox (monkeypox) webpage for clinical guidance on symptoms, testing and public health notification requirements.

Current eligibility criteria for free mpox vaccination:

  • All sexually active gay and bisexual men (cis and trans).
  • Sexual partners of the above.
  • Sex workers.
  • Laboratory workers who analyse specimens from mpox cases.
  • Healthcare workers at higher risk of exposure to patients with mpox (following risk assessment)
  • Post exposure vaccination for high-risk close contacts of mpox cases (as advised by the department)

Any eligible patient who has not been vaccinated, or is due or overdue for their second mpox dose should be vaccinated as soon as possible to maximise protection against mpox.

Please refer to the Victorian Mpox vaccination program guidelines for clinical guidance on the department’s Mpox (monkeypox) web page under Resources for Professionals.
