The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital has been working hard to improve access for patients to the eye care that they need.

Updated waiting lists for patients to be assessed for cataract surgery indicate:

  • Patients will usually be offered a specialist clinic appointment within six months of receiving a referral
  • If cataract surgery is indicated, an operation will usually occur within three months of the initial visit.

A reminder that all GP referrals for patients with cataract to the Eye and Ear Hospital require an optometric report. This information ensures that patient referrals are triaged to the most appropriate sub-specialty clinic within a clinically appropriate time frame.

All referrals to the Eye and Ear Hospital are triaged and managed according to key threshold criteria which are available to download (.pdf, 246KB).

The Eye and Ear Hospital is committed to working in collaboration with GPs and Primary Health Networks to improve patient care and will provide quarterly updates regarding wait times for cataract surgery moving forward.
