Improving hepatitis B management in general practice

About this activity

This quality improvement activity is designed to increase the percentage of patients diagnosed with hepatitis B who have up-to-date ALT and hepatitis B DNA (HBV DNA) results. Both these tests are required to guide treatment choices – HBV DNA (current viral load) shows which phase of hepatitis B infection the patient is currently in. ALT monitors for active inflammation of the liver. Having these tests up to date improves health outcomes by detecting early recurrence of active disease, and early referral and treatment.

Goal
Increase the number of patients diagnosed with hepatitis B who have up-to-date ALT and HBV DNA results.
Measures
Use Pen CAT4 to identify the percentage of patients with an ALT result in the past 6 months and HBV DNA result in the past 12 months.
Improvement ideas
  • Use Pen CAT4 to pull a list of patients with hepatitis B without up-to-date LFT or HBV DNA test results.
  • Decide how you will recall the patients on the list (for example: phone call, SMS, email or letter), what you will say, and how you will divide the tasks.
  • Use resources to help patients understand the importance of ongoing testing.
