The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) provides training for general practitioners and nurse practitioners in medication assisted treatment for opioid dependence (MATOD).

The training qualifies participants to become authorised prescribers of methadone, and for greater than 10 buprenoprhine opioid replacement therapy patients. It is approved for continuing professional development.

The RACGP training includes face-to-face and online options. It covers harm minimisation, patient assessment, opioid pharmacotherapy, clinical assessment, and the practical management of medication options.

Successful participants can be linked with addiction medicine specialists for continual consultation to provide ongoing safe and confident prescribing.
