The following contains information about the Targeting Treatable Traits in COPD to Prevent Hospitalisations (TERRACOTTA) project.

What is the TERRACOTTA trial about?

The trial is all about trying to keep patients with COPD exacerbation-free and out of hospital, by measuring and addressing treatable traits associated with COPD.

What is the time commitment?

Over three months, the time commitment is approximately 50 hours of nurse time and one hour of GP* time. Setting up takes approximately six hours:

  • two hours – training on recruitment of eligible participants, data collection and coordination of care
  • four hours – searching the electronic medical records, contacting people to invite them to participate.

Then, each participant takes two to three hours:

  • one hour – spirometry assessment**
  • one hour – baseline patient interview
  • one hour – delivery of the TERRACOTTA intervention*.

*Only for eligible participants in intervention clinics

**Only if no spirometry in past 12 months

That’s a lot … can the research team do any of this?

Absolutely. The only thing we can’t do is deliver the TERRACOTTA intervention for you. The amount and type of help we can provide depends on:

  • your location (e.g. within Victoria)
  • your clinic’s privacy policies (e.g. whether we can take patient lists off-site).

Do we get reimbursed for our time?

Of course. You get up to $2500 for staff administration and training:

  • $1000 after participant no.1
  • $500 after participant no.5
  • $750 after participant no.10.

You also get $200 for each spirometry assessment and baseline interview with an eligible participant, and $200 for each delivery of the TERRACOTTA intervention.

Source of funding

This project is funded by the GSK.
