Northern Health has changed its policy about accepting referrals to general surgery clinic for inguinal hernia.

From now on, for patients with a clinically apparent inguinal hernia, referrals do not need to include an ultrasound. This is a Choosing Wisely Australia initiative, aiming to reduce unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures.

The Choosing Wisely program, which is aimed at clinicians and consumers, was launched in Australia in 2015 and has already generated a 40 per cent increase in GP awareness. 47 per cent of GPs and 55 per cent of specialists are in strong agreement that they have a responsibility to reduce the inappropriate use of tests, treatments and procedures.
