An introduction to working with LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people in safe and inclusive ways, for nurses and allied health professionals.
This workshop explores the unique pre-arrival and settlement experiences of LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people, the impact of those experiences on their health and wellbeing, and how it shapes their interactions with health care settings and providers.
Practitioners will engage with frameworks for safe and inclusive care practices, techniques for assessing the unique health and wellbeing needs of LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people, and sources for appropriate resources and referrals.
Prerequisite:
- Participants will be expected to have completed either a Foundation House Introductory workshop, or ‘Refugee and Asylum-Seeking Experiences’ online (provided in two modules, taking approximately two hours to complete).
- The online option is available free as a pre-requisite when you register for this workshop.

Learning outcomes:
Through practical activities, reflective exercises, and real world examples, participants will develop skills to:
- Understand the unique experiences and risks faced by LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people during both displacement and resettlement, and how it shapes their engagement with health settings
- Reflect on and identify assumptions, biases, or gaps in current frameworks and ways of working that may impact negatively on the provision of inclusive and effective services
- Apply safe and inclusive health care practices, including awareness and management of trauma triggers
- Develop practical strategies to meet the unique health and wellbeing needs of LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people, including the differing needs between people with diverse sexualities and those who are gender diverse or intersex
- Understand the relevant services, resources and referrals for LGBTQIA+ forcibly displaced people.
