CALM Yarn is a culturally appropriate, full‑day suicide prevention workshop for people working with First Nations people, in primary health care across the NWMPHN region. Delivered by an accredited First Nations trainer and developed in partnership with a First Nations Elder, the training builds confidence to have a yarn and support someone from thoughts of suicide to safety. CALM Yarn is a one day, culturally appropriate suicide prevention workshop for people working with First Nations people, in primary health care in the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network region.
CALM Yarn is a one day, culturally appropriate suicide prevention workshop for people working in primary health care in the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network region.
The training is delivered face to face by an accredited First Nations Elder trainer and has been developed in partnership and with an Indigenous Elder.
The workshop is designed to support capacity building through increased confidence, knowledge and skills, to help people have a yarn and support someone from thoughts of suicide to safety. In this workshop, CALM Yarn acknowledges the broader social, cultural and historical factors that contribute to First Nations suicide and centres approaches that are culturally appropriate and community informed.
CALM Yarn introduces participants to the CALM model, which provides a structured and culturally responsive framework for supporting someone experiencing thoughts of suicide. The workshop includes opportunities for reflection and discussion, and participants are provided with practical resources to support their engagement. This includes;
- the CALM model that guides participants through the four stages of intervention,
- a workbook with tools, skills and contacts,
- safety planning tools such as the “Be Safe” app or worksheet,
- certificate of attendance.
