LGBTIQA+ Postvention Report
1 October 2018 – 31 January 2021
The LGBTIQA+ Postvention Report included a qualitative research study into how Switchboard Victoria responded and supported its staff following the loss by suicide of a staff member in April 2018.
The findings were then used to develop a Suicide Postvention Response Plan specifically for LGBTIQ+ organisations and communities.
The LGBTIQA+ Suicide Postvention Response Plan contains guidelines, actions and procedures to help alleviate distress, reduce risk of imitative suicidal behaviour, facilitate bereavement and promote recovery that can be implemented following the death by suicide of an LGBTIQ+ individual.
The plan was developed to be provide tangible recommendations and actions for organisations and communities to implement.
Examples of how the plan has been used include:
- being embedded within Regional Suicide Postvention Response Plans to provide a LGBTIQ+-specific resource for the community and local organisations
- being actively disseminated by a peak body to member organisations
- being actively disseminated across the LGBTIQ+ and suicide prevention service systems
- Switchboard representatives spoken about the research at numerous events and conferences.
The LGBTIQ+ Postvention Response Plan guide is available on the Switchboard Victoria website.
