Family violence never takes a break

  27 November 2025  NWMPHN

Across the holiday period data shows that there is a spike in family violence incidents.

GPs and other general practice staff are often the first people to whom family violence victim-survivors disclose their trauma. While many health care organisations close or limit services during this period, the demand for family violence care and support increases.

During the holiday period, therefore, it is vital that information on available supports, emergency assistance and resources is available to anyone trying to contact your practice. Please make sure that family violence services are listed prominently on your website and contained in outgoing telephone messages.

Here is some sample text for you to consider:

For you and your staff, please remember that listening to disclosures of family violence can be distressing. Health professionals are encouraged to self-monitor for signs of vicarious trauma and burnout and seek support when needed.

For GPs, the RACGP runs a free program to support you if you are impacted vicariously. You can access it at this webpage.

Nurses and midwives can access free and confidential assistance on 03 9415 7551 through the Nursing and Midwifery Health Program Victoria.

All health professionals, care staff and non-clinical practice staff can access peer support through Hand-n-Hand.
