You can now refer patients straight from your practice software (or via a webform) to free, early digital mental health support. It’s making it easier than ever for patients to get the support they need.
For many people, the hardest part of getting mental health support is knowing when or how to seek help. They’re not quite coping, but they don’t feel unwell enough to seek help. They worry about wait times, cost or travel. Or feel things need to hit crisis point first.
Now there’s an easier way to help them take that first step. Medicare Mental Health Check In helps prevent symptoms from escalating and frees up specialist services for those who need it most. It offers free, digital, confidential support for people aged 16 and over who are experiencing mild mental health challenges such as feeling down, anxious or overwhelmed.
The service, funded by the Australian Government and delivered by St Vincent’s Health Australia, is making it easier than ever for patients to get the support they need.
What patients get
Patients complete evidence-based online modules on common challenges like worry, sleep and low mood. They can work through it alone or with a qualified mental health practitioner via telehealth. Practitioners include psychologists, counsellors, social workers, registered nurses and occupational therapists.
The service uses Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LiCBT). It takes about six weeks to complete, and patients can access about six to eight practitioner sessions. Patients build practical skills while symptoms are still mild, so they can better manage life’s challenges.
Clinically safe and monitored
Patients complete regular check-ins using measures like the PHQ-9, GAD-7 and K-10. Practitioners review the results and refer patients to more intensive care if they need it. St Vincent’s is accredited against the National Safety and Quality Digital Mental Health Standards.
Three ways in
- GPs: GP clinics that use HealthLink can refer patients directly through their practice software. GP clinics without HealthLink can use a webform available here: Medicare Mental Health Check in Webform.
- Online: Adults 18+ can visit the website at medicarementalhealthcheckin.gov.au, complete a short online form, and are offered a phone-based intake assessment. Or they can just request a call back at a time that suits.
- Phone: People can call 1800 595 212, 8:30am to 5pm weekdays (excluding public holidays).
Is it right for your patient?
The service suits patients with mild mental health symptoms. It is not a replacement for more intensive care for patients with severe or complex symptoms or in crisis.
