Overview
Many people facing the end of life wish to be cared for and die at home. This initiative boosts palliative care coordination and integration to support people who have a known life-limiting condition, by improving choice and quality of care and support in the home.
The Precious Time website was developed for people who received an end of life diagnosis, their friends, families and carers.
It was one of the key recommendations made by a community panel, gathered by NWMPHN to discuss the question: “What does dying look like and how can we help people achieve this?”
The website provided a searchable database containing more than 400 organisations and businesses that provide useful services. It included expert advice on how to talk about dying, how to live fully supported and with dignity, how to sort out legal and financial and many other topics relevant for people and their families. It also featured a blog with regular posts from subject matter experts.
In 2022 the website won a Gold Medal at the 2023 Australian Design Awards.
Outcomes
NWMPHN is committed to supporting patients, carers and clinicians navigating all aspects of end of life, including palliative care, mental health care, advance care planning and grief counselling.
To do this, we regularly review our assets to ensure we are delivering optimal value for all service users. An evaluation of the Precious Time website was conducted between August 2024 and December 2025. The review included website analytics, a survey of listed service providers and interviews with peak palliative care bodies. Key findings included:
- The website had 56,106 annual views in 2024 (down from 72,586 in 2023)
- Most survey responders were unaware of Precious Time, and had not received referrals through the website.
- Overall, there was consensus among the palliative care peak bodies that the palliative care information for community is oversaturated. They recommended fewer websites and a coordinated state or national approach.
NWMPHN has redirected it’s activities to meet the changing end of life service ecosystem and Precious Time website ceased operating on 30 June 2025. We thank our partners and the community and all those who have been involved with this website over the years.
