An interactive webinar by two specialist Ophthalmologists from the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, for GPs to improve their knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patients with conditions affecting their eyelids including ectropion, entropion, droopy lids, lumps and bumps- benign and malignant, as well as the assessment of children with leukocoria, systemic surveillance in those with ocular melanoma and the ocular complications of systemic cancer treatments.
A 90 minute interactive lecture style presentation for GPs and GP registrars.
The presentation will aim to address the objectives as outlined:
- Managing the child with leukocoria & ruling out retinoblastoma
- Systemic surveillance for metastatic choroidal melanoma
- Ocular complications of systemic cancer therapy
- Assessment of lumps and bumps on the eyelid, benign (e.g. chalazion, benign cysts, papilloma, seborrheic keratosis), and malignant (basal, squamous, sebaceous cell carcinoma and melanoma), including their management.
- Understanding common eyelid conditions including ectropion, entropion, droopy eyelids and the restoration of eyelid function, and identify red flags for emergency assessment.
- Presentation of orbital disease, learning how to identify their uncommon presentation and investigations.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Detail the assessment of lumps and bumps on the eyelid, and have a safety framework to differentiate between benign and malignant.
- Outline common eyelid conditions and identify red flags for emergency assessment.
- Describe systemic surveillance for metastatic choroidal melanoma
- List ocular complications of systemic cancer therapy
- Explain management of the child presenting with leukocoria & how to rule out retinoblastoma
Dr Jwu Jin Khong, Ophthalmologist
Dr JJ Khong is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, appointed at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the Austin Hospital. Dr Khong graduated from the University of Melbourne with honours in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2001. She underwent general ophthalmology training in Adelaide, followed by subspecialty training in orbital, plastics and lacrimal surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 2011. She undertook a further international orbital fellowship in Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam in 2017. Her academic interest in thyroid eye disease leads to a PhD degree in the genetic study of thyroid eye disease in 2018, supported through the Australian Postgraduate Award. Dr Khong is a clinical supervisor for the Victorian eye registrar
Dr Roderick O’Day, Ophthalmologist
Dr Rod O’Day is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, Royal Children’s Hospital and University Hospital, Geelong and an Honorary Researcher at the Centre for Eye Research Australia. He specialises in ocular oncology, medical retina and general ophthalmology. His research interest is ocular oncology, in particular best practice management of choroidal naevi, advances in management of retinoblastoma and new diagnostic tools for intraocular lymphoma.
