An interactive webinar by a specialist Ophthalmologist from the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, for GPs to improve their assessment and management of Red Eye and Corneal Emergencies.

A presentation by a specialist Ophthalmologist to assist GPs to develop an approach to the assessment of patients presenting with a red eye and/or corneal emergencies. With lots of pictures and case discussions to illustrate the pertinent points for differentiating the different diagnoses and for identifying serious conditions not to be missed. An outline to GP management and when to refer. 

Cases will include conjunctivitis, endophthalmitis, inflammatory eye conditions, corneal infections and problems for contact lens wearers. In addition, corneal and other eye injuries, acute angle closure glaucoma and periorbital cellulitis are included. Tips on the red flags for red eyes and the sort of questions and examinations that are most helpful for developing your safety net with regards to the assessment of the above conditions.

Dr Thomas Campbell, MBBS DPhil (Oxon)

Dr Campbell is a clinician scientist at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the University of Queensland. He is interested in ophthalmology, medical statistics, evidence-based medicine, and medicine in the developing world. He has a particular interest in Indigenous and developing world outreach ophthalmology services and the logistical, as well as scientific, obstacles to providing cutting edge ophthalmic care to these communities.

He completed an undergraduate degree in ecology at the University of Queensland before moving to the UK, where he completed an M.Sc and D.Phil in neuroscience at Oxford University. He then worked at St Cross College and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford as a research fellow in psychiatric genetics. In 2010, Dr Campbell returned to Australia and completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland. He is currently undertaking subspecialty fellowship training through the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Centre for Eye Research Australia, and the Royal Children's Hospital.

At the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Identify the common causes, signs, symptoms, and appropriate management of red eyes
  • Demonstrate the red eye ‘rules of thumb’ and understand their importance in risk stratifying patients
  • Be able to elicit and integrate the ‘red eye red flags’ into clinical assessment and make urgent referrals
  • Demonstrate supportive measures required in the management of serious eye conditions whilst awaiting definitive care
  • Demonstrate how to access ophthalmic advice and recommended clinical pathways in both routine and emergency situations
