The Royal Children’s Hospital and Royal Women’s Hospital in collaboration with the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network are hosting a seminar for health professionals. Presentations will include Jaundice in the first six weeks, prenatal genetic testing, iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, and Fetal growth and well-being.
General Practitioners (GPs) are an accessible and fundamental resource for families and children’s health care needs but could be better utilised, particularly for maternal and paediatric health needs.
Almost inevitably, the first consultation in pregnancy will be with the woman’s GP. Given the increasing complexities of first trimester care, particularly with respect to genetic counselling, this emphasises the considerable responsibility that all GPs in the care of pregnant women. Their initial consultation usually require prenatal investigation including genetic screening tests and management of abnormal findings such as anaemias.
Six weeks infant check in general practices is routine in Australia. Clinical history and examination are the most important tools in neonatal assessment. Babies often present with non-specific symptoms, but a thorough clinical assessment can identify the ‘unwell baby’ who requires immediate transfer to hospital.
This education seminar addresses these complex issues by providing GPs with a variety of conditions and issues specific to the health care of both maternal and paediatric populations, highlighting the evidence based approaches to diagnosis, treatment and management and referral process from a general practice perspective.

- Diagnose and manage neonatal and infantile jaundice in the first six weeks and appropriate timing of referral
- Monitor fetal growth and well-being
- Manage iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy
- Utilise population carrier screening and referral processes in relation to pregnancy
