National Viral Hepatitis Mapping Project, The Doherty Institute.

This advanced level training will enable GPs to effectively diagnose, manage and treat chronic hepatitis B in the primary care setting. Successful completion will accredit community-based medical practitioners to prescribe s100 highly specialised drugs for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B.

This interactive course will involve online learning modules, in-depth presentations, case discussions, and facilitated group work giving attendees an opportunity to discuss practical strategies with peers and specialists.

Whilst it is specifically targeting GPs of Chinese heritage or those who see a large amount of patients from a Chinese background, all GPs are welcome to attend.

Facilitators will include:

Associate Professor Benjamin Cowie - Associate Professor Benjamin Cowie is an infectious diseases physician and epidemiologist, with appointments in both the Epidemiology Unit at VIDRL and VIDS. In addition, Ben is a medical epidemiologist with Communicable Disease Epidemiology and Surveillance, Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, and is an Honorary Principal Fellow in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. He serves on a range of communicable disease, clinical and public health committees at state, national and international levels.

Doctor Nicole Allard - Dr Nicole Allard is a PhD student in the Epidemiology Unit, researching how people living with hepatitis B access care across the Australian health system. She is also a general practitioner at cohealth with an interest in refugee health, health literacy and hepatitis B. She has past experience working overseas in Cambodia in HIV prevention and in remote Aboriginal communities. She has represented the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) on various state committees, is a member of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM) and is a board member of Hepatitis Victoria.

Travel Grants:
Travel grants may be provided to GPs in rural and remote Victoria to attend the course and become a HBV s100 prescriber. For more information please contact: VHHITAL@nwmphn.org.au  

Please note this course is funded by the Victorian State Govt and interstate participants are welcome to attend subject to space. A $660 fee will apply for all interstate participants. 

Learning outcomes:

  • Screen at risk patients appropriately
  • Plan antiviral treatment for HBV infection
  • Utilise treatment protocols for monitoring patients’ responses to HBV antiviral therapy
  • Implement shared care between primary and tertiary settings including appropriate referrals
  • Develop management plans for patients requiring ongoing monitoring
