Tips and Tricks for Avoiding Mishaps- Eye Day

An education event for GPs to improve their knowledge and skills in eye tips and tricks for avoiding mishaps.

An interactive, 4 hour lecture style presentation for GPs and GP registrars. There will be four specialist speakers that will present on tips and tricks for avoiding mishaps with regards to the assessment and management of a variety of different common and emergency eye conditions, including coverage of:

• Tips and tricks on examination techniques in children
• Red flags for serious conditions not to miss in children
• Warnings of the uni-lateral red eye and treatment options
• Emergency management of penetrating eye injury
• Gradual vision loss
• Writing eye referrals

Learning outcomes:

• Update skills to improve the diagnosis and management of common eye conditions presenting to GPs.
• Describe the pertinent 'Golden Eye Rules' to assist GPs in the assessment and management of eye conditions and eye trauma.
• Develop a safety framework for assessing eye trauma and eye symptoms so as to avoid mishaps
• Utilise tips and tricks for examination techniques in children
• Outline and discuss best tips for writing referrals to the Eye & Ear Hospital Eye Clinics to reduce number of rejected or incomplete referrals

SPEAKERS:
Dr Georgia Cleary, Consultant Ophthalmologist
Dr Georgia Cleary is a cornea specialist.  She trained in ophthalmology in the UK where she completed a PhD in the field of cataract surgery and intraocular lens design.

Dr Rahman Nazari, Consultant Ophthalmologist
Dr Rahman Nazari graduated with honours from Tehran Medical School. He has had specialty training in retinal diseases and vast experience in ophthalmic surgeries. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

Mr Mark Etheridge, Orthoptist
Mr Mark Etheridge has a Bachelor of Orthoptics. This was followed by additional clinical training which was followed by his registration to the British and Irish Orthoptic Board. He has specialised in Strabismus as well as Retinal clinics. Mark has worked as student coordinator with the Eye and Ear hospital for the last 9 years and continues to work as a senior clinician.

Dr Shivanand Sheth, Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist, Strabismus and Neuro-ophthalmology
Dr Shivanand Sheth consults at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, the Royal Children's Hospital, the Royal Women's Hospital and the The Canberra Hospital. He has completed his fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Neuro-ophthalmology at the Royal Children's Hospital and the The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Dr Shivanand has won various awards within the ophthalmology field.
