NWMPHN is inviting mental health clinicians operating in Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges to participate in free suicide risk training.

This one day workshop is designed to deliver mental health practitioners with knowledge and skills in the management of risk in clients who have borderline personality disorder (BPD). This is a unique opportunity to participate in training with the renowned Cairnmiller Institute.
The Cairnmiller Institute is one of Australia's leading centers for psychological and trauma counselling and providers of psychology education and training.
Clinical psychologist and psychotherapist Kelly Watt-McMahon will be facilitating this session. With over 25 years experience, Dr Watt-McMahon specialises in BPD and its treatment and management.
Clients with BPD traits are often chronically suicidal and use self-harm to regulate their emotional world. Working therapeutically with these presentations requires the clinician to manage and assess the risk differently.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between chronic and acute suicide risk
  • Utilise different methods of risk assessment used with chronic suicidality.
  • Develop a systematic approach to reduce risks associated with managing patients with BPD
  • Evaluate emotional responses and counter-transference between the patient and the health professional.
